The characteristics of Matsumoto Oshi-e Ningyô are that the design is stuffed heavily with cotton and the faces are painted in Ukiyo-e (the floating world of Edo period) style. It is very rare to find old Oshi-e Ningyô in this quality and size today. The popularity of Oshi-e Ningyô declined when steam engines spread throughout Japan and made more goods (Hina Ningyô in this case) accessible to the local regions. The production of Matsumoto Oshi-e ended in the late Meiji period (1868-1912).

She is set inside of a glass enclosed presentation box The two sides are beveled glass creating an arresting design of multiple images. From the front she catches her reflection in the mirror. Japanese Ambassador Ningyô. These were used as international gifts of cultural exchange. This doll has a poignant face with a compelling expression. She is a very young little girl wearing a rich dark blue kimono with pale flowers and a red obi. It is really just a wonderful doll that will surely enhance any serious doll collection. 29.25 inches, (74.5cm) tall. circa 1930's. From a widely renowned and published collection that has been exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum and Japan Society.

A very special early 20th century version of the Japanese interpretation of a Western doll, probably inspired by the Friendship Doll Exchange in 1929, when the United States gifted Japan with several hundred western dolls. This doll is very rare and a great find for the serious doll collector. She holds a wonderful stylized dog and makes a charming impression along with her great detailing. An important period piece. Magnificent master work by Hirata Gōyō II (1903 - 1981) of a Bijin (young beauty). It features a wonderfully carved head and body cover with many layers of gofun oyster shell lacquer, with sumptuous brocade with gold thread wave pattern and applied chirimen silk with painted image of waves and cherry blossoms. circa 1945. 14.5 inches (37cm) tall. After graduating from elementary school, Hirata Gōyō II studied the creation of dolls under his father, Gōyō (the first), who was known as an artist of Ikiningyo (lifelike doll). After the death of his father, he succeeded to the name Gōyō (the second) at the age of twenty-one.
