Very rare Japanese comic demon Buaku Kyogen mask dating from the Edo Period, the golden age of Noh Drama. The Buaku mask is a Kyogen version of the Noh Beshimi. Kyogen were short, humorous skits performed between Noh acts to lighten the mood. The heavily knit brows and wide leering grimace are wonderful characteristics of this mask. It is covered in layered colored gofun (oyster shell lacquer), with hair painted with thin lines of ink over the top. It is brilliantly carved, accentuating the depth of his eye sockets, and adding a sense of drama. 8.25 x 6.5 inches, 21 x 16.5 cm.

A powerful and extremely rare Japanese Edo Period Kyogen mask of a Nio Guardian King, ferocious native deities, often associated with the Naga Dragon Kings, who converted to Buddhism and now act as bodyguards for the Buddha. The Edo period was the golden age of Noh Drama. Kyogen theater was performed between Noh acts. This mask is a brilliantly carved work of art, accentuating the dramatic power of this important mythical figure. The mask was covered in layered colored gofun (oyster shell lacquer). 9 x 7 inches, 23 x 18 cm.

A large, rarest of rare Japanese 18th century Bijin Saga Ningyo, depicting a standing female holding her flowing kimono. Saga Ningyo are the most sought after of all Japanese Ningyo. They are almost never seen on the market, and only rarely enter Western collections, public or private. This is a once-in-a -lifetime opportunity for the serious connoisseur of Japanese art. This finely carved and sculpted figure is a masterpiece from all angles. The rich pigmentation of the robes are built up with pigments in a technique called 'moriage'. The many classic patterns are extraordinary. Saga Ningyo are very different from more familiar Japanese Ningyo forms. This Saga Ningyo, an exceptional and magical presence to behold, is of an unusually large size (18.5 inches, 47 cm), significantly larger than most known examples. The exact and detailed treatment of her kosode kimono, the flowing lines of the carving, the elegant arrangement of her comb-secured hairstyle, and the rendering of her gorgeous face, is an artistic achievement on the highest level.

An exceedingly rare ancient Japanese Heian (794-1185) or Nara Period (710-794) Engraved Bronze Tortoise. The entire shell, front and back, has engraved artistic images of the people and symbols of the era. The tortoise is a symbol of wisdom, and is able to defend itself on its own. It personifies Water, Moon, Mother Earth, Time, Immortality, and Fertility. Creation is associated with the tortoise and it is also believed that the tortoise bears the burden of the whole world. Japanese Early Meiji Period Kneeling Gosho Ningyo (Palace Doll) depicted with a gift box offering, wearing a fitted silk crepe haragake bib with a cherry blossoms design, tied at the neck and waist. He has a delightfully rendered face with a bright expression, slightly open mouth, and painted features. His forehead has a painted auspicious mizuhiki (presentation ribbon). He is covered overall in a fine white gofun (oyster shell lacquer). 4h x 4w inches, 10h x 10w cm.

Rare Image by Japanese Woodblock Print Artist, Saito Kiyoshi (1907 - 1997). The Saito Kiyoshi Museum in Japan is devoted entirely to the work of this artist, and his work is in many other museums, including the Cincinnati Art Museum, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Art Institute of Chicago. His work was exhibited at the Salon Printemps in 1948, and in 1951 he received first prize at the inaugural Sao Paolo Bienniale. Influenced by Piet Mondrian, Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Gauguin, Odilon Rodin and Edvard Munch - among other famous artists, his unique images combine traditional Japanese elements with Modern, Cubist, Abstract and Impressionist qualities. Rare Artist's Proof by Japanese Woodblock Print Artist, Gen Yamaguchi (1896 - 1976): Poetry of Early Autumn (1948). Illustrated in Yamaguchi, pl. 61. This is the artist's proof of this image, created for the artist's approval before the set of fifty prints were created. Yamaguchi achieved an international reputation when he was awarded first prize at the International Print Biennale in Ljubljana, Yugoslavia, 1957, and a grand prix at Lugano, Switzerland in 1958. He experimented constantly, manipulating his materials and images as he sought to achieve innovative results. The Gen Yamaguchi Memorial Prize is now a top prize in Japan for woodblock print artists. Large Meiji Period Bunraku Puppet of Tokagawa Ieyasu. Extremely rare on this grand scale (4 feet high, 122 cm). This fine quality puppet was possibly made at the request of the puppeteer Kiritake Monjuro II, as the hero in Bunraku plays. It has a fantastic dynamic presence, and is carved of Poloma wood covered in gofun (oyster shell lacquer) featuring sumptuous silk brocades with Tokagawa crests and dragons.
